DR. A.P.J ABDUL KALAM
Hon’ble Former President of India
Born on 15th October 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamilnadu, Dr.Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, graduated in Science from St. Joseph’s College, Trichy in 1954 and specialized in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1957. Dr. Kalam is a pioneer in fibre glass technology and led a young team to initiate this effort in ISRO from design, development leading to production of composites rocket motor cases. Dr. Kalam made significant contribution as Project Director to develop India ’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-3) which successfully injected the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit in July 1980 and made India an exclusive member of Space Club.
He was responsible for the evolution of ISRO's launch vehicle programme, particularly the PSLV configuration. After working for two decades in ISRO and mastering launch vehicle technologies, Dr. Kalam took up the responsibility of developing Indigenous Guided Missiles at Defence Research and Development Organisation as the Chief Executive of Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). He was responsible for the development and operationalisation of AGNI and PRITHVI Missiles and for building indigenous capability in critical technologies through networking of multiple institutions. One of his significant contributions was creating Research Centre Imarath for advanced technologies. He was the Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from July 1992 to December 1999. During this period he led to the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in collaboration with Department of Atomic Energy, which made India a nuclear weapon State . He also gave thrust to self-reliance in defence systems by progressing multiple development tasks and mission projects such as Light Combat Aircraft.
As Chairman of Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) and as an eminent scientist, he led the country with the help of 500 experts to arrive at Technology Vision 2020 giving a road map for transforming India from the present developing status to a developed nation. Dr. Kalam has served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, in the rank of Cabinet Minister, from November 1999 to November 2001 and was responsible for evolving policies, strategies and missions for many development applications. Dr. Kalam was also the Chairman, Ex-officio, of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) and piloted India Millennium Mission 2020.
In the bio-medical area, Dr. Kalam along with his team collaborated with medical specialists in the development of Kalam-Raju stent during 1994 - 1996. Kalam-Raju cardiac stent after qualification trials has been fitted to many needy patients. This development has further led to the creation of a production unit of state-of-the-art stents. Also, he had initiated the use of carbon-carbon and carbon-polymer materials for production of floor reaction orthosiscalipers which has reduced the weight of the caliper to 1/10th of the original weight during 1995 – 1996. Over 50,000 children have been fitted with these calipers.
Dr. Kalam took up academic pursuit as Professor, Technology & Societal Transformation at AnnaUniversity, Chennai, from November 2001 and was involved in teaching and research tasks. Above all he took up a mission to ignite the young minds for national development by meeting school students across the country. During the last decade, Dr. Kalam has addressed over five million youth below the age of 17 and inspired them to become an active participant of India Vision 2020. He has addressed several children science congresses across the country.
Dr. Kalam is passionate about bringing rural prosperity through PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas), in which science and technology has to play a key role. Based on his diverse experience he has been propagating the concept of World Knowledge Platform through which the core competencies of organizations and nations can be synergized to innovate and create solutions and products for the challenges of 21st century.
In his literary pursuit Dr. Kalam authored a number of books, such as "Wings of Fire", "India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium", "My Journey" and "Ignited Minds - Unleashing the power within India", “Indomitable Spirit”, “Guiding Soul”, “Envisioning an Empowered Nation”, “Inspiring Thoughts”, “Children Ask Kalam”, “You are born to blossom”, “Family and the Nation”, “Life Tree” and “The Luminous Sparks” a collection of his poems. Many of them have become household names in India and among the Indian nationals abroad. These books have been translated into many Indian and foreign languages.
Dr. Kalam is one of the most distinguished scientists of India with the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 37 universities and institutions from India and abroad. He has been awarded with the coveted civilian awards - Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997). He is a recipient of several awards and Fellow of many professional institutions.
International Recognitions
The Royal Society, UK has awarded Dr Kalam with the “King Charles-II Medal” for Science and Technology in October 2007. He received the Woodrow Wilson Award in 2008. The Royal Academy of Engineering, London conferred on him the International Medal 2008 in June 2009 at London . The Hoover Board of Awards presented him the Hoover Medal 2008 at New York in April 2009. The Aerospace Historical Society in Collaboration with the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories (GALCIT) at the California Institute of Technology awarded him the “2009 International Von Karman Wings Award” in September 2009. The honourary Doctorates in Science and Engineering he received includes Nyenrode Business University, Netherlands, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg USA, University of Kentucky, USA, Oakland University, Michigan and the University Sans Malaysia.
Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India on 25th July 2002. After five eventful years he demitted office on 25th July 2007. His focus is on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020. His accent is on constructive networking and excellent human resources for an economically developed, prosperous and peacefulsociety.
THIRU. SURJIT SINGH BARNALA

Shri. SURJIT SINGH BARNALA was born on 21st October, 1925 at Ateli, Begpur now in District Mohindergarh in Haryana where his father was a Magistrate. His father passed away when he was only nine years of age. Shri Surjit Singh Barnala had to struggle hard for acquiring education. After matriculation, he went to Lucknow for higher studies and passed Law from Lucknow University in 1946. During his stay at Lucknow, he participated in Quit India Movement in 1942, received lathi blows from the Police and was arrested. He started practicing Law in District Court at Barnala. And in 1967, he was elected as MLA from Barnala Assembly Constituency and represented the Constituency till 1999. In 1969, he became Education Minister of Punjab. During his tenure, he was instrumental in establishing Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. In 1977, he was elected as MP and was inducted as Cabinet Minister in Janata Party's Government headed by Morarji Desai with Agriculture, Food, Irrigation and Rural Development as his portfolios. When he was elected to the Parliament, Barnala Assembly Constituency seat fell vacant and was contested by his wife Mrs. SurjitKaur who won with a large margin. During Emergency and after operation Blue Star, he was kept in Solitary confinement for a long time. He went to jail nine times for various political agitations and spent in all, three and a half years in jail. In 1985, he was elected President of Shiromani Akali Dal after the assassination of Sant Longowal. Under his leadership, Akali Dal had a landslide victory in Assembly Elections and he became the Chief Minister of Punjab in 1985. He managed the affairs of the State very well in spite of there being terrorism at its peak in those days. He stood like a rock against terrorism and became the prime target of terrorists. He faced them boldly when other politicians in the State had succumbed to their threats.
In 1990, he was appointed as Governor of Tamilnadu, but due to some differences with the Central Government, he resigned after about a year. He was elected to Lok Sabha in 1996 and again 1998 and was appointed as Cabinet Minister with Chemical & Fertilizers and Food & Civil Supplies Portfolios. He was the first Governor of Uttaranchal State. He was the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 03.01.2003 till 02.11.2004
He has traveled widely and has represented India in the United Nations, F.A.O., S.A.A.R.C. and other international organizations. A nature lover, he is fond of painting, reading and writing. He has painted scores of paintings mainly during the jail stints and exhibitions of his paintings were held in 1998 in the Art Gallery of Patiala University and in 2004 at Hyderabad State Art Gallery.
He has also authored a book entitled "Story of an escape" which was published by Penguine. Its second edition was published as "Quest for freedom - Story of an escape" by Natraj Publishers, Dehradun and was released by the President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It has been published in Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Urdu and has been set in Brail also.Shri S. S Barnala assumed Office of the Governor of Tamilnadu on 3rd November 2004.
P. MURARI, I.A.S. (Retd.)

Born on August 19, 1934, Shri. P .Murari I.A.S. (Retd.) is currently the advisor to the president, FICCI. He holds the post of Chairman Task Force-3 on States Relations Committee, Ministry Of Home Affairs, Government of India. In the past he has held major positions in the government, both at the Centre and in Tamil Nadu. Apart from holding key positions in the Government of India, Shri.Murari also chaired special projects.
He is also on the Advisory Board of Great Lakes Institutes of Management (Affiliated to Kellog School – USA) and Loyola Institute of Business Administration.
He has served on the Boards as Director or as Governor of Councils as under:

Shri. P. Murari holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Madras and joined the IAS in 1957. He retired in 1992 as the Secretary to the President of India.

Shri. RAJEEV RANJAN, I.A.S serves as Secretary to Government of Tamilnadu, Industries Department. His educational background includes graduation in Physics (Hons.), Post Graduation in Management from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (1982-84) and M.Sc., in Policy and Planning from London School of Economics, London (1998-99).
He joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1985. The work experience includes working in various capacities in the field and Policy Making levels in the Government of Tamilnadu in the Finance and Home Departments, Collector of Tiruchirapalli District, Managing Director of Tamilnadu Steels Limited, Member Secretary of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority etc before moving to Government of India in April 2000. He has also worked as Director in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion in Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India,(2000-2005) and handled Patents, Designs, Productivity, Consultancy and UNIDO Desks and also involved with Industrial Policy issues including National Productivity Council, and Quality Council of India
He was subsequently selected as Chief (Joint Secretary) (2005-2007) in the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), which has been set up by the Government of India to energise and sustain the growth of the manufacturing sector and contributed to the preparation of the National Manufacturing Policy in 2006 and the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Program (NMCP) which are under implementation.
He has worked as Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce in the Government of Tamilnadu from July 2007 to July 2008 and was actively involved in the formulation of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Policy 2008.
He was then posted to work as Principal Secretary, Commercial Taxes & Registration Department in the Government of Tamilnadu. Tamilnadu has introduced VAT from 1st January, 2007 and the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department mobilizes nearly 75% of the State revenue collections. As convener of the working group finalised the ‘Model for monitoring of the Inter-State transaction/movement of goods as well as the computerization requirements’ and other prerequisites for introduction of GST in the country. Also, selected and deputed by Government of India to the ‘Tax Analysis and Revenue Forecasting Programme’ by the Duke Center for International Development of the Duke University, USA (July-August, 2009) which was successfully completed and certificate received.
He is also working as Chairman of TITAN Industries, Tamilnadu Newsprint Papers Limited (TNPL), , Tamilnadu Industrial Explosives Limited (TIEL), Tamilnadu Industrial Guidance and Export Promotion Bureau, Tamilnadu Petro Products Ltd (TPPL), as Director of several undertakings like Tidel Park Ltd.(TIDEL), Neyveli Lignite Corporation, ELCOT, SIPCOT, Tamilnadu Trade Promotion Organisation (TNTPO) and Member of Tamilnadu Electricity Board, Tamilnadu Maritime Board, IIT Madras Research Park, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Syndicate of Anna University, Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli.
